What Gauge Should Your Metal Roof Be? A Homeowner's Guide to Steel Thickness in New Brunswick

Most homeowners look at a metal roof quote and see one big number, the price. What they don't realize is that one of the most important quality decisions for the entire job is hiding in a small number. Often buried somewhere in the material line is the gauge of steel.

 The gauge of steel tells you how thick the metal actually is, and the difference between 28- and 30-gauge can be the difference between a roof that looks sharp and performs well for 50 years and one that dents, ripples, and ages prematurely. Some contractors quietly use thinner metal than they should to win the quote on price, and the homeowner has no idea that they're getting a cheaper product.


How gauge steel actually works.

The first thing to know about gauge and the part that confuses most homeowners is that it's an inverse system. The lower the gauge, the thicker the steel. The higher the gauge number, the thinner the metal. 26 gauge is heavy industrial commercial work metal. 28 gauge is standard quality exposed fastener residential roofing metal, and 29 gauge is also common for residential use. Slightly thinner than 29, 30 gauge and higher is agricultural or budget product and where the warning signs start. Each step down in the gauge number is a meaningful jump in thickness, strength, and durability. The difference between 28 gauge and 30 gauge isn't a small percentage. Why do some contractors use thinner metal?

Here's the part that doesn't get talked about: Thinner steel is cheap to buy. Less raw material in the panel means a lower cost per square foot for the contractor, which means they can quote a lower price than the competitor who's using a heavier gauge. To a homeowner comparing two quotes side by side, those quotes look like the same product: a metal roof is a metal roof. We've got a few thousand dollars between them. The cheap one wins, and the homeowner has no idea that they just bought a thinner, lower-performing metal. Some contractors are upfront about the gauge they use; most aren't.

The problem with thin-gauge metal shows up sometimes either over time or on the day of installation.

Here’s what to expect when 30-gauge metal is installed on your metal roof.

Denting from impact: Hail, falling branches, a leaned ladder, even an installers foot traffic on a hot day.

Oil canning: This is the wavy, rippled look you’ve probably seen on metal roofs. Thinner metal means more flex under thermal expansion and contraction, and this causes the flex to show up as a visible wave.

Reduced wind resistance: A thinner panel is more prone to lifting at the edges during our maritime high winds and storms. Wind resistance rating drops as the gauge thins.

Premature aging: Combine all of the above and you get a roof that looks tired and cheap in 15 years. For the price and the life expectancy of 50+ years, that matters a lot.


Why 28-29 Gauge is the sweet spot for residential?

For most residential metal roofing in New Brunswick, particularly exposed fastener panel systems, which is the most common residential install, 28-29 Gauge is the right standard. Here's why it's the sweet spot:

- What climates? 28-29 Gauge handles our snow loads, our wind events, our ice damming, and our temperature swings with significant deformation or stress.

Going from 26 on the standard residential roof exposed fastener is real money. For many homes the added durability over 28-29 doesn't justify the cost difference. You're paying for thickness you don't actually need. It is an industrial standard when the major manufacturer specs their residential exposed fastener systems; 28 Gauge is the baseline. That's not an accident; it's the engineered sweet spot.


The one question to ask every contractor if you're getting metal roof quotes. Here's the one I want you to ask every single contractor before you sign anything:

 What gauge will you be installing?

 Acceptable answers are:

- 28 to 29 gauge for residential exposed fastener systems.

- 26 gauge for standing seam systems on premium upgrades.

 What to look out for is 30 gauge or higher or "I'm not sure, let me check on that." It's industry standard; you don't need to worry about it. The contractor should know the exact gauge of the panels that they're quoting, and they should be willing to put that in writing on the quote. Better still, ask them to show you the manufacturer's spec sheet for the panel system they're proposing. Every legitimate manufacturer publishes detailed product spec sheets, and a good contractor will happily walk you through them.
